Hi, I’m Josie Sommers, a real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Realty. I grew up right on the Prior Lake and Lakeville line, and my connection to Prior Lake runs just as deep as my connection to Lakeville. I help first-time buyers figure out where to start, what they can afford, and how to find a home they love without stretching past their comfort zone. Text me anytime. No question is too basic.

Prior Lake Is Home Turf

I grew up swimming competitively in Prior Lake, and I’ve spent years coaching here too, at both Hidden Oaks and Twin Oaks Middle Schools. Storm Chasers, the Learn to Swim program I run with Storm Swim Club, got its start at the Twin Oaks pool. A lot of my friends from those years still live in Prior Lake, so this community has never stopped feeling like home.

Coaching taught me how to help someone through something new and a little scary, one step at a time. That’s exactly how I work with first-time buyers.

Lake Life Without the Lakefront Price

Here’s the truth most first-time buyers want to know: homes right on Prior Lake, with direct water access, are well established and priced high. But you don’t need to live on the lake to enjoy it.

  • Neighborhoods within walking distance of the water can be much more affordable than lakefront homes.
  • Townhomes give first-time buyers another way into Prior Lake, along with some new construction.
  • Public beaches and parks mean the lake is part of your life either way.

I can help you find those pockets where you get the Prior Lake lifestyle at a price that fits your budget.

My Favorite Things About Prior Lake

  • The lake itself: I swim in Prior Lake every year, and Sand Point Beach is one of the best spots to spend a summer day.
  • Downtown Prior Lake: The farmers market, and Edelweiss Bakery, one of my favorite stops.
  • Fourth of July: The fireworks over the lake are amazing.
  • Pleasant Street Art Walk: For years I did henna at this great little art walk downtown.
  • The Wilds Golf Club: One of the places I’ve played music in Prior Lake.

When I’m not helping buyers, I’m usually doing henna (henna.by.josie), coaching in the pool, or playing music with The Jake and Josie Show and Lavender Whiskey.

Two Agents, One Plan

Every client I work with also gets the experience of my dad, Tom Sommers, who has 20+ years in South Metro real estate. We work as partners on my transactions. I’m your main point of contact for every showing, question, and offer, and Tom is right there behind the scenes whenever a situation calls for extra experience.

You never have to wonder if something got missed. Two sets of eyes are on every step.

Prior Lake First-Time Home Buyer FAQ

Can a first-time buyer afford a home in Prior Lake?
Usually not on the water. Homes right on Prior Lake with direct lake access are well established and priced high. But you don’t have to be on the lake to enjoy it. There are plenty of more affordable neighborhoods within walking distance of the water, plus townhomes and some new construction around the city. You get the lake lifestyle without the lakefront price tag, and I can help you find those pockets.

Should I buy in Lakeville or Prior Lake?
Honestly, I love both. I grew up right between them, and I have a big heart for each. Prior Lake has a special pull for me because of the lake and everything to do around it, but the two are so close together that you really don’t have to pick. Live in one and you can enjoy the other any time. The best choice comes down to the home, the price, and what fits your life.

Do I need a home inspection, even on a newer home?
Yes. Whether a home is brand new or decades old, I always recommend including a home inspection contingency in your offer. People aren’t perfect, and when it comes to building or fixing anything in a home, mistakes can happen. There are always things you should know about the home you’ll be living in. That shouldn’t be scary. Knowledge is power, and an inspection puts all the facts on the table before you commit.

Do you also work in Lakeville and Shakopee?
Yes. Prior Lake, Lakeville, and Shakopee are my three focus areas, and I’ve coached swimming in all three communities. If you’re torn between them, I’m happy to help you compare. You can also check out my Lakeville page.
